Where does the word "Smeg" come from (as heard in the television show Red Dwarf)
It's usually used as an insults, as in "you smeg-head" or "smeg-off" or "i can't get this smegging thing to work". I know it's not a real English word, so where did it come from? Who is the first person to say it?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to Wikipedia, smeg "is a mild vulgarism". The entry states that the creator of "Red Dwarf" made it up.
I believe it is much like "Frak" is used in "Battlestar Galactica". The word is used anytime there would typically be an expletive used by a character.

While the show creators say they made it up, some speculate it came from the term "smegma," which according to dictionary.com is "a thick, cheeselike, sebaceous secretion that collects beneath the foreskin or around the clitoris." (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/smegma)
And now I'll never eat cheese again, thanks.
