Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

ClassBrain Response:

This has long been a subject of much debate and to this day, no one is absolutely sure which is the oldest civilization. This is mostly because people cannot agree on the definition of the word "civilization". The most common definition of civilization is “an advanced state of development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of writing, and complex political and social institutions.” Essentially, Mesopotamia is the most decided upon answer to your question, based on archeological evidence and the above definition. Here are a few links to more information:

Sumeria

Definition: Ancient civilization thought to be one of the first ever. It is thought that the use of the wheel started there. The Sumerian people were certainly the first to gather in city-states and develop a system of writing, as well as many other "firsts." Based on the lowlands around the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, the Sumerians were vulnerable to attack. They were eventually conquered by the Akkadians. Major city-states included Ur, Uruk, Kish, and Lagash.

It's debatable. Although, the earliest known civilizations came from Mesopotamia, the area that is now Iraq. Here the Sumerians grew into a civilization around 5000 B.C.
