Hagerstown, Maryland is named after Jonathan Hager, a German immigrant, who was the first official settler of what is now Hagerstown, MD. Mr. Hager settled there in 1739. It was originally called Elizabeth Town after Jonathan’s wife. The city is the largest in Washington County. Mr. Hager originally bought 200 acres and through the years the property was sold and added to by various people to become what it is today. The Zion Reformed Church is one of the oldest churches in the area and the cemetery has some of the earliest settlers in the region. Many of them go back to the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Today many of the historic buildings are still intact and can be viewed on a walking tour of the city. A map and guide can be found here: http://walkingtours.marylandmemories.org/BeginTour.html. Another great place to look for information on the history is: http://www.hagerstownmd.org/parks_rec/citypark.asp.
