Where does Brazilian Samba come from?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The birth of Brazilian Samba really was born from the Rio de Janeiro area of Brazil.
The roots of this dance are African in origin, blending with the latin from Portugal. The country was a melting pot, mixing many nationalities over the past few hundred years. For the full history of the dance, check out wiki.

Samba dance was the way African slaves found they could express and practice their particular religion by throwing parties, with hopes that the Portuguese government wouldn't figure out what they were doing. But, when the police did figure out the slaves were practicing a religion apart from Christianity, the parties were shut down. The slaves found another way to preserve the samba dance and rhythms! They cleverly combined the dance moves into other styles of music and dance, which eventually delivered schools for samba around 1888 once slavery was abolished in Brazil.
