On July 12-17, 1967, riots broke out in Newark, New Jersey, starting at the 4th precinct station where a black cab driver named john Smith was being held after being arrested and beaten by police for pulling around a double parked police car at the corner of 7th street and 15th avenue. By the time peace had been restored, 22 people were killed and over 700 injured, and over 1,000 arrested.
