Where did the word "Dude" come from anyway?

Australian Surfers? How?
Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The term "dude" was first recorded in 1883 as New York slang for "fastidious man" (very like how "metrosexual" is used today). It was later used to refer to finicky, well-dressed "city boys" who had decided to try their luck out west, but were rather inexperienced at being cowboys (which is where the term "dude ranches" came from). "Dude" resurfaced in the 1960s surfer culture as the meaning we know today, for reasons unknown (as far as I can find).

The word Dude means an individual mostly male, the word dudette for famales first came about in 1873 and mostly refered to as a job like bush hook dude or as such in dude ranches.
Most seem to think that it origanlly ment a well dressed man hanging out in the old west. I personlly think surfers somewhere desided they needed a word to call they're buds and dude was it. I have also heard that A Dude is what they call a hair on an elephants butt, but I haven't researched enough to know if that part is true.
