M$Most seem to think that it origanlly ment a well dressed man hanging out in the old west. I personlly think surfers somewhere desided they needed a word to call they're buds and dude was it. I have also heard that A Dude is what they call a hair on an elephants butt, but I haven't researched enough to know if that part is true.
