Where did the practice of holding up an open flame at a concert originate?

I'm interested in learning what was the first time this occurred - what year was it, where was the concert, who was playing, what song? I am also interested in knowing why people did/do this... is there a point to it?

Basically the use of lighters in concerts started due to the influence of several sources, making it difficult to trace. So there are many theories of which band started it all. One theory is it started Neil Diamond concert of 1972 or a Bob Dylan concert at 1974, because the audience had lighters available. Another theory is that the gesture is symbolic of songs with flames mentioned, such as the Doors' "Light My Fire." Another theory is that this practice came out of a performance during Woodstock where candles (rather than lighters) were held aloft, and evolved from this.

It started in the sometime in the early 60's or 70's

It started as a way to signal the band that the audience wanted an encore

People do it for many reason
It shows that all the people in the crowd share common ground because they all like the band they are seeing. Also it's a much more respectful way to show your appreciation since it doesn't drown out the sound of the performer unlike clapping.

People don't hold up lighters any more, they hold up cell phones!

Dang, you must have put a lot of research into this, I totally agree that it is difficult to trace. So most likely we will never know. I guess back then it did not seem to be that big of a deal, and Yea i have seen tons of people hold up cell phones now a day. I give you an A+ on your research and answer.

After a bit of searching I found this ->

"I suggest you look to the fabled mudfest of 1969, otherwise known as Woodstock, and the songbird known as Melanie, whose performance there in a rainstorm was rewarded by appreciative fans who held various lit items up to demonstrate their gratitude. Melanie documented this illuminating incident in her song 'Lay Down (Candles in the Rain).' Being a bit too young for Woodstock-- never mind that I was a kid living in Germany at the time-- I can't vouch for how many candles were held aloft for Melanie or, more to the point, how said candles happened to be available in plentiful supply at an event that lacked even a hint of infrastructure. But there, I believe, is your answer."

The Romans first held candles at events for better lighting.

I did find an interesting history of how fire began and thus ended up on an iphone, which includes a 1983 Journey concert somewhere in New Jersey.
But I wouldn't take it as fact.
