"Ayiti" ("land of high mountains") was the name for the mountainous region of the island given by the natives. It was transliterated as "Haïti" when the French settled the island (the H in French is silent, therefore "Ayiti" and "Haïti" sound the same; it's only in English where we say "hay-tee").
