Where did the GEICO "spokes-gecko" work before he started working for GEICO?

or:

Prior to that the GEICO ads showed the gecko answering that no, he is Gecko, not GEICO, so callers were making a mistake calling him. For example:

So who did the gecko work for back then?

As a baby Day Gecko "Mallory" was a usual tyke of a gecko. Mallory liked lounging on rocks, snapping up bugs with his tongue, skittering all over the place like a rambunctious baby Day Gecko should be doing...until one day unlike any other on his home island in the Maldives.
Mallory was swept away from his home by a perfect storm of wind, water, and ship. After being blown by the wind off of his favorite rock Mallory found himself adrift near shore but to far out to aptly swim back. Afloat on the husk of a coconut Mallory woefully set sail for destiny. An unreported due to its shallow and relatively safe predicted travel path tsunami pushed young Mallory into the deep Indian Ocean where he was swept into the wake of a passing English cargo ship.
Clinging to his coconut husk lifeboat for his life Mallory was lost but the passing ships wake pulled him close to the hull of this English cargo ship and this is where the magic began. A lone sea captain gazing to the sea for solace noticed the little fellow and his precarious drifting coconut husk. It was the sun and a Day Geckos lack of eyelids that was the signal to the captain and seeing this reflection from Mallorys lidless eyes he took this as a sign from the heavens of a need to save the poor gecko from a dismal and watery fate and the captain did.
Once aboard the ship Mallory was to become the pride of this lost sand found soul sea captain and the captain brought Mallory everywhere, taught Mallory to speak English, taught Mallory weights and measures, taught Mallory the ways and meas of the high seas. Mallory was growing up right before the captain and the crews eyes. Learning to speak proper English helped Mallory befriend the entire crew and it was not long before the quick witted Mallory was entertaining the captain and his ships crew with all sorts of acts and impressions, making everyone forget their troubles and laugh the long and lonely days at sea away. Everyone loved Mallory and if this could only last forever everything would have been ship shape.
Eventually the cargo ship and its crew arrived in the Port of London and the journey of the seafaring Day Gecko Mallory was over. Mallorys ship, unladen and empty of crew and cargo, was an scary place for a now teenage Day Gecko and it was now that Mallory took the rambunctiousness of his youth and the adventurous spirit of his coming of age time and combined them to bring to life a show like the Port of London has ever seen. Earing his supper each day by singing and dancing on the wharfs of the port. He did not know his time was short here as the unlikely event that was to shape his career was about to happen against all odds.
Leo and Lillian Goodwin were on vacation in London at that very time and catching the singing and dancing of Mallory while on a tour of the wharfs and piers to admire the massive ships and the unloading of cargo. These two founders of the GEICO insurance company were instantly enamored with Mallory and after seeing his wonderful act offered the well spoken entertainer a once in a lifetime chance to fly back to the United States with them and live a life of a royal Day Gecko for the rest of his days.
Mallory jumped at the chance and packed his hat, bells, shoes, and cane in a tight satchel and gleefully skipped down the dock and into history. After getting to the States Mallory took a job with GIECO in the mail room at first but this was not to be his final destiny.. Mallory had bigger plans.. Mallory had an idea! As a ad manager was passing Mallorys office with some suggestions for slogans, sayings, and catch phrases designed to help the Goodwins and GEICO sell more insurance ..not impressed with the suggested ideas Mallory said the words that would make him famous and rocket this well traveled Day Gecko from the Maldives into super stardom as the iconic insurance spokes person we know today...
Mallory said.. how about "15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance" and you know the rest is advertising history.

M$After the cartoon ended its run, he tried for over a decade to break into the film industry, but his only performances of note were cameos in such 80's and 90's fare as Gorillas in the Mist, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Weekend At Bernie's II.
Frustrated that no-one in Hollywood would take his acting ability seriously, he left the limelight, and moved to London. While there he remained in the entertainment industry but operated largely behind the scenes. Among some of his claims are that he invented the Spice Girls and taught Simon Cowell everything he knows about the entertainment business.
Quite by accident, in early 1998, the president of the prominent advertising firm, The Martin Agency, was attending a private corporate event featuring the Spice Girls as the live entertainment, where he met the Gecko and told him he would make the perfect spokesman for a new ad campaign idea they were throwing around to pitch to Geico Auto Insurance. With nothing currently on the burner he happily accepted and the rest is advertising and reptilian history.
