Apparently the type of Sign Language that is more universally used, originated in Europe.
The first documented usage of a form of sign language was in the 17th century when a book by Juan Pablo Bonet was published that illustrated physical sign and gestures that could be used by the deaf community as a way to communicate.
In the 1750 French priest by the name of Abbe Charles Michel de L'Epee founded one of the first schools for the deaf. L’Epee took it upon himself to learn the hand gestures that were used in Bonet’s book (which some of his students had been using at home) and started to evolve the signs to help the children learn French. Before long this form of Sign Language was starting to be taught throughout Europe.
In 1815 an American Minister by the name of Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet traveled to Europe and learned these techniques of Sign Language, which would eventually evolve into what is now known as American Sign Language.
