Where did rap music originate?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

To go even further back, men from Africa have used "rap" for hundreds of years. Chanting to the beat of the drums and other instruments lead the way for what we traditionally know today as rap.

The first traditional rap artists were:
Kool DJ Herc
Grandmaster Flash
Grand Wizard Theodore
The Sugarhill Gang
Afrika Bambaataa
Kurtis Blow

The Sugar Hill gang had the first mainstream popular rap song, "Rappers Delight" in 1979.

Rap was first given national recognition by the Grammy Awards in 1989. The Fresh Prince, or Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff won the first one. (Remember "Parent's Just Don't Understand"?)

According to Africa Within: There is a dispute regarding the actual place of origin. According to Afrika Bambaataa, people think it started in the South Bronx, but officially it came from the West Bronx, because that is where the first rapper Kool Herc was from.
