Where can you find common ground?

Here is your homework assignment. Please find some "common ground" that you have with political pundits, news executives or full blown "other party" politicians that you have previously found to be the "Antichrist". A little background: today while riding the train to work, I read an article on my "iDevice" from Esquire magazine on Roger Ailes, head of Fox News: someone I admittedly did not hold in the highest of esteem. But after reading the article, I realized that he is not really the "devil" I had previously perceived him to be, but rather a man who feels he has small town American roots and is striving to win (and succeeding) at the ridiculous circus that is American news/entertainment.

My greatest fear is that the monster that is the media of this age is turning families, friends and community members against each other at an alarming rate, all by blowing minor differences in opinion completely out of proportion. So please help me by pointing out NOT how you are different from your "opposition", but how you are the same, or at the very least, where common ground can be found on any important issues and/or articles that point out the "human qualities" of people you disagree with.

Well I can say that do like to throw my words at the TV and at the politicians but I never really though about it, Inside my heart I am probably a socialist or dictator. I never really believed in the concept of voting because I honestly do not think that everyone has the same opinion, and to vote is to only give away any of the political power that we do have. Sure we can go ahead and vote for the best candidate but in my mind, thats not good enough.

This is coming from a 12 year old in Canada, so feel free to interpret as you wish, just felt like sharing what I had to say here on politics.

I can't say that I disagree with any singular politician because I really dislike the political game. I do feel however with all politicians that our "common ground" is to keep America safe.

Whee if found personal issues was a few years back when studios and writers had such a disagreement that the writers went on strike. I'm striving to become a professional screenwriter and I knew a lot of people at the picket lines. The studios had one huge nonnegotiable issue: no residuals on new media for writers. This meant anytime you watched a t.v. show or movie on the internet only the studio got money for the advertisements, which could add up to multi-millions in a year, or months.

They stated they did not want to lock themselves into any agreement until they understood where multi-media was headed. Streamline videos is just the beginning. So my "common ground" on their thinking is that technology moves fast and if they do lock themselves in, they could lose unfairly.

I don't like it, but I in a way, understand it. The writer's suffered, actors suffered, crew suffered and in the end the studios won big over the writers. I know the studios are protecting their interest, but once media is defined, what's gonna happen when the contracts run out next time?

The strike cost $2.5 billion dollars to the L.A. economy. I hope this doesn't happen again.

Yes of course, like any other socially, communally, ideologically or politically conditioned person, I used to see the ‘devil’ or the ‘Antichrist.’ Because you just cant help it. The secret behind seeing a devil is that once you have found a way to see ‘God’ (subjective), you have opened the door to welcome the ‘devil.’ In fact, we are very funny people. We always carry both of them together with us wherever we go. Sometimes I think that whatever the projection or perception we visualize outside us could just be the reflection of our own inner-self. Sometimes when I am Godly (filled with virtues of goodness), I can see and I can feel God. Other times I am devilish, I can see the devil.

Now, when I have learned the art on how to differentiate between social criticism and social commentary, I am quite capable of seeing a person as a 'person,' neither as a devil nor as a God (subjective).

The world where we live today seems such a chaotic place to find a common ground. Family is the basic unit or institution of our social setup, but can we put our hand by our heart and say honestly that we have found a common ground where all the members of a family speak the same language. Moving further, there are Republicans always finding fault with Democrats and so is the Democrats. I like the phrase “common ground.” And what else could be the basis of a common ground other than the qualities that makes humans as “humans.” Those qualities are none other than what the great prophets, gurus and leaders possessed and wanted man to nurture them. I think that only the virtues like love, compassion, brotherhood, sympathy, unselfishness and serving the needy and the diseased ones can help us find a common ground.

Developing these virtues does not require cramming old scriptures and repeating them like parrots, neither it requires stamping by any authority. These are so simple virtues that we can learn from a 2-year-old at our home itself. Because the children are pure, untouched, unbiased, not polluted by our discriminatory and poisonous ways. They are still the child of the almighty or whatever name you call him with.

But can we perceive a common ground? Probably not, at least with the brains we carry which is full of information and instructions in the conscious, subconscious and unconscious that guides our decision making by labeling, criticizing, condemning and spreading our poisonous thoughts to drag this already deteriorating humanity to the verge of the line that separates us from animals. The only way to find the common ground is “unlearning.” Getting rid of all those taboos, beliefs and prejudices. You will be surprised to know that those people whom we call as “bad” have shed less blood than those who have left an ‘ideology’ for us. Take a look at the world’s history. How many wars have been fought over those ideologies? Divide and rule! The masses are so gullible to be easily distracted. There have been divisions in the past and will always be. Because ‘ideology’ needs following. Following like a herd of sheep. We will always remain happy to be divided by the ideologies.

Regarding media, it served us with so many goods but it also served us with the “breaking-news stuffs.” Today, news-reading has become somewhat synonymous to TRP ratings (mostly).

Having said that I wonder that media cater us with what we want to see and hear. They toy us with our own instincts.

We cannot get away with just condemning these acts because we are a part of it. We feed them and we flourish them. Every evil is the product of this society. We are equally responsible for it.

There is certainly a ray of hope! The writers, journalists, celebrities, social workers, thinkers, philosophers, leaders, policy makers are the sections of the society which works as caterers to the masses. It depends a lot on them as to what they want the masses to believe. Do they (or us) want a more liberal, tolerant, patient, sensible and humanistic society or just the old war loving tribal groups?

(Please comment on this article: Positive or negative, I would appreciate them and it would help me to learn where I was wrong, thank you).
