Where can you buy prior models (in new condition) of Apple products at a discount after a new version is launched?

Every year or so, Apple refreshes each of their products (iPods, iPhones, iPads, etc.) and rumors are swirling that Apple may even launch a new version of the iPad before the holidays. Are there any stores or websites that sell the prior models (that haven’t been purchased yet) at a discount when Apple launches their new products? In this case, I’m not looking for used or refurbished products, but just the products that didn’t get sold before the new version came out. What kind of discounts can you find in these instances?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Apple does a pretty good job of selling the majority of their old models... they do this 2 ways:

1. They lower or stop shipments of products prior to a new product launch. In fact shortages and outages at Apple Stores are often used as hints of coming product refreshes.

2. They offer rebates or incentives. This applies mostly to their ipod line which they align to back to school shopping. They offer rebates or reduced prices of ipods when purchased with a computer for back to school and then usher in new ipods almost exactly when that program ends.

Because of these two tactics, it's rare to find new / unopened boxed products more than a few months after a new product hits stores. Because there is such a short lag time between new products and selling out of old products, it's hard to find discounts. One of the best I've seen though is MacMall. Their discounted prices are usually comparable to what the education discount would be.

- I just recently looked for deals like you mentioned in your question... Ended up buying a new iMac with educators discount direct from Apple instead of an older iMac.

Check out dealmac.com -- they're basically a deal aggregator for Mac hardware and accessories. They seem to have refurbished or discontinued models listed almost every day. You might need to have some patience as they may not have the exact model you want, but sooner or later your desired item will turn up.

tigerdirect.com. This website does sell ipods that are brand new and it sells refurbished and factory new ipods. The only exception to this would be that it doesn't sell iphones. ( nobody sells refurbished or older iphones, it's an apple thing). To be honest, there is no difference between new and factory refurbished, so if i was looking for a cheap ipod, I would definitely look at the apple outlet store. Thanks, and sorry my computer messed up and entered the answer too soon...

Also, there is a 'Clearance' spot on Apple's on line store. What it offers varies, but it's there. It's listed *under* the refurb listing. So, go to apple.com, click on the 'Store' Tab. Scroll down, and, on the left hand side of the page, under 'Special Deals' there's a listing for 'Clearance', under the Refurbed listings. As I type this, there are two MacBook Pros listed - both 17".
