Where can one go to get a 101 course on car repair/engine building?

I'm aware of the auto colleges that you need to dedicate all your time to. I remember Junior colleges used to have them, but none near me.
Tip for best answer: M$3.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Well here is a site for information. http://www.10w40.com/ has a fantastic link for searchable auto repair manuals, but that is not as good as hands on.

Do you have time but not money?
Here is an interesting thought, have you considered volunteering for a high school shop class? You could be a teacher's aid learn auto repair AND teaching skills all without paying a dime.

Do you have money but not time?
Talk to auto repair shops in the area, perhaps one of them would be willing to take a few bucks to stay late and show you the ropes around the shop.

If instead you would like me to research more specifically to your area please consider providing your city state and Zip code.

I hope this helps, have a great day.

in your own home, the best way of teaching yourself is self teaching... It doesnt hurt to have someone there that always knows about cars to begin with.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Mike

Ideally locating a community college that has a few classes would be best. If you post up where you live I'm sure there is a place around you. I wouldn't recommend attempting to do any major repairs on your own. One option would be to check some car enthusiast forums, try focusing on your favorite car, and find someone around your area who would be willing to take you under their wing. If no schools are around and you cannot locate an experienced mechanic to help you then your best bet would be Haynes manuals. They are informative and easy to follow. And you can buy them almost anywhere. Even though I work on cars every day, I still like to buy a Haynes manual if I'm working on something new. If your located near the Bay Area, CA let me know and I can give you some more personal hints.

Many local community colleges offer excellent courses on auto repair/engine building. Fees are very reasonable also.

Local libraries also have auto manuals based on your model and year (Childress manuals). These are extremely informative and helpful. Worth checking out.
