Where can I read books online?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hi @z_rich!
These are the best sites to read E-book for Free:
1. Project Gutenberg
This site is famous and functions with an agenda of digitalizing books that are out of copyright. You can obtain most of the classic books on this site free of charge. You can also request for an entire collections and they will send you a DVD with all the e-books that have digitalized for free. You can donate to them to show your support.
2. Google Books contains e-books and some new books as well. However, you cannot download books from their site but this is an excellent reference that might suit your research needs. You will also find Google Books here.
3. Free E-books.net has some of the rarest books you might not find on other sites. Another similar site is Get Free Ebooks.
4. Plant PDF is hosted by Nitro PDF's makers. This has a PDF version of lots of books which you can find at Gutenberg. The texts are bigger and can be read easily. You can also download books from this site.
5. The Burgomeister Books
This site has a lot of E-books for contemporary and classic. You can request any books but you have to agree to delete the books after reading them since keeping them in your system is not legal.

Annelisle, you have compiled a great list. I'm going to bookmark this page for future reference.
Personally I pretty much stick to google boooks for research like you say.
I came across this site recently: http://www.booksshouldbefree.com/
cool thing is they have free audio books(have not listened yet)
and I like the interface, easy to navigate, but it's short on content.
Another interesting site is this:
http://librivox.org/
Extensive collection of free audio books read by volunteers; the goal is to record every book in the public domain.
- its like a crowd sourced audible.com for PD
