Where can I learn to do the Heimlich maneuver?

I just had to perform this on my son at dinner. He was choking on a piece of cauliflower and even though it saved his life I'm not sure if I did it right. I would like to be more prepared next time.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hello, I have I.T.L.S. training and a significant amount of first responder medical experience.

You need to learn the Heimlich maneuver from a qualified instructor. You do not want to learn how to do it over the Internet.

The good news is that training for this is often free or is combined as part of another important course such as basic CPR.

I recommend that you call your local fire department (NOT 911) to inquire about the next available course.

Both the Heimlich maneuver and CPR are important skills that I think everyone should take the time to learn. Neither the Heimlich maneuver or CPR are difficult to learn. There are a few simple steps to each. However, you need to practice and "feel" is an important aspect of both.

For example, when applying the Heimlich maneuver, you could inadvertently break a rib and puncture a lung. While clearing the airway is a primary concern, if you have never held a person correctly or applied the right amount of pressure in the right location preforming the Heimlich without causing further damage requires a small amount of skill.

Classes for both CPR and the Heimlich maneuver are typically taught over the course of a weekend or a few evenings. I highly recommend that you consult local medical professionals and obtain the correct training for this. You could really help someone out!

You can find a step by step guide on how to do the heimlich maneuver Here. I would personally recommend taking a First Aid course in your local community, not only will you recieve training in the Heimlich for adults and children but you'll also learn CPR and other useful emergency first aid skills all from someone more qualified to instruct you in such a serious matter than the internet.

The local fire department here has members that teach CPR classes. They can certify people in CPR. Call your local department and ask.

This photo of a coal miner in Omar, Virginia speaks volumes about The Great Depression of the thirties. You can see how tire he is.
