Animal Rights is very misunderstood by most people.
Animal rights at its core is giving animals the same rights as people - this includes the right NOT to be owned.
Animal welfare is a bit different and is more along the lines you are looking for I think.

if you want to read about the laws on animal cruelty - you need to remember these laws are different in every country, and every area - find a site for your local bylaw department, or even an SPCA type site specific to your area (RSPCA for the UK, ASPCA for USA.. etc.)
