There are different types of burns such as minor, first degree-burns, second-degree and third-degree burns. Some burns such as minor burns can be treated at home, but other types of burns should be treated by a doctor to reduce the risk of infection. After a burn, run cool water over the area for at least 15 to 20 minutes. You may also use a cold compress and take pain medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. This will reduce pain and swelling. You may also apply the gel from the aloe vera plant or purchase the aloe vera gel that contains 100% aloe vera gel.
Burns such as second-degree and third-degree burns should be treated by a doctor. Your doctor may give you antibiotic ointment to prevent infection. In the mean time, you should elevate the burned part of the body above the heart. You should never apply butter or ice to a burn.
