Where can I get a copy Akuhead Pupule's "coconut wireless" radio tag?

Aku was a Hawaii radio personality (KGMB in Honolulu). Before and after some of his segments, a bumper would play: before the news, it would be some coconuts clapping together with some singers singing "doo doo...", and at the end the singers would sing "On the coconut wireless..." Here's an example: http://www.kivaspirit.org/Akuhead.mp3

I am trying to find the entire bit to use on my podcast (in honor of my tutus (grandparents)).

Tip for best answer: M$50.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

1) I would contact the radio station directly. If you want to use the whole bit on a podcast, you will be running into copyright laws. Since the bit is owned by KGMB, they will be able to grant you permission and hopefully help you obtain a good quality recording of the bit. You can contact them at:
KGMB 9 (CBS)
1534 Kapiolani Blvd.
Honolulu HI 96814
(808) 973-5462
e-mail: kgmbnews@pixi.com
WWW: http://www.kgmb.com

You can find out more about copyright laws in U.S. Copyright Office - Copyright Law: Chapter 10 http://www.copyright.gov/title17/92chap10.html

2) If they can't provide you with the bit, then you might check out ReelRadio. ReelRadio has some longer clips of Aku that might have the complete bit on it.

3) Honolulu Hawaii Radio School (who names J. Akuhead Pupule as a luminary) might have clips of his show for educational purposes that would include the complete clip.

I'm not sure how legitimate they are, so you might also try some of the other Hawaiian colleges such as
Hawai'i Pacific University

University of Hawai'i at Mānoa

Leeland Community College

If the above suggestion doesn't yield the audio file your looking for the only way your going to get it is by contacting the radio station. I doubt you will be able to find someone with a sound byte from that long ago in a digital format ready for use.

here is the radio stations website with phone numbers/emails. I'm pretty sure they keep all their audio files recorded.

And the clip wasn't loading for me. FYI. Probably too many people trying to access it or something.

Here's what you do. Find a free trial for a recording program, and go to the end of the program, before the tag. Find out how to record from what is playing on the pc, and click record, and play the soundfile.
That is the only way I can think of how to do this, save from contacting the radio station.

This is not what I'm looking for. Did you listen to the clip or read the question?

okay I'm learning a little more, here are the lyrics to the whole song written by larry W. Jones (famous for writing over 3500 island songs. The whole concept of coconut wirelss, basically refers to the fast speed at which news and gossip travel on the islands, they call this effect "the cocnut wireless", it was also a phrse used to describe how the oral traditions were passed down through the generations.

Today, it has become to me quite clear
This is not just another tropical year
Our feelings are not just a fraternity
The love we share belongs to eternity

You may not hear it on the island radio
May not even hear it on the telephone
Might not be in the Sunday morning island press
Love will be in the coconut wireless, nonetheless

Yesterday I could have told you so
Our future was set a long time ago
Love as ours has a long time to go
Forever is time enough for love to grow

The mainland may sink into the sea
But islands were meant for you and me
So, listen to the coconut wireless, dear
It says love like ours will never disappear

You may not hear it on the island radio
Might not be in the Sunday morning island press
So, listen to the coconut wireless, dear
It says love like ours will never disappear
