Where can I find legal information about contests/giveaways?

I'm looking for my legal requirements if I want to give away something (like a book) on a podcast or web site. Template contest rules would be great too.
This is US/Canada based.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Thanks for the great information - and the blast from the past. The second link is a 2001 article adapted from a Tech TV show!
Sadly, it seems most giveaways are illegal unless you can afford to Lawyer it up.

For something as simple as a book giveaway just look up another contest and copy their rules and change the personal info'. It is cheaper then hiring a Lawyer to do a writw up.

Is it your book? Do you own the legal rights to it?
If not, I would ask the authors/publishers what you have to do to be able to give it away.

There are some sites that will offer you a product to review, and a similar product to give away -- they however keep the giveaway product, and you run the contest, then you pick a winner, and they ship it out.

Just basically- you want to have the OK from the company to give the product away....

Thats all I have.
I hope someone has a bit more info ...... I know there are bloggers out there who give away lots of items per month, but like I said, the company has asked them to review the product, and hold a giveaway.
