Where can I find info on buying a postal truck in LA?

Looking to buy a truck like the one in the photo, used obviously. I've heard of auctions etc, and know of someone how found one on craigslist, but can't seem to track any down.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

Hi - Postal trucks in the Los Angeles area can be found on eBay and you need to not just look in Los Angeles but also Long Beach. The main garage of the South Bay area is in Bellflower. The United States Postal Service can't sell the trucks/jeeps directly to the public, so they have an independent contractor who puts them up on eBay.

In the San Bernadino area, the Postal Trucks are run through the dealer auction in Pomona. The listing of these vehicles are not open to the public, so you need to find a small, used car dealer who would be willing to go to the auction for a flat fee and help you acquire your vehicle. Dealers have access to every car and condition prior to the sale and you can ask to see it as well the day before the auction.

Dealers are hungry right now. Don't be shy to throw a deal on the table and see what comes of it.

I'll make a jump and assume that this truck will be used as an onsite / remote / location production vehicle.

In this case, you might find that a Postal Truck has a few disadvantages including:
  • Postal Trucks are used for frequent stop-and-go deliveries. This type of wear usually results in significantly more wear than normal
  • Reliability may be a problem. You don't want to have to deal with employees calling you a hour before going to a location saying that the truck won't start again.
  • A short person can barely stand in them. This doesn't seem like a big deal when you're thinking about someone sitting in it or simply pulling equipment, but you might be shocked at how convenient it is for someone to be able to stand up inside of it. At the very least, no one will "toss" expensive equipment into it.

I would recommend an "Aerocell" or "Bubble" Van.

These vans are a favorite of infrastructure telecommunication companies. These folks often attach ladders to the outside and fit steel shelves, desks and drawers inside. They're currently in production by Ford and GM.

One of the best features of these vans is that there are a few different configurations for the back door. My favorite is the type (like pictured) that lifts up. This provides a rain / sun shelter and significantly extends the roomy cab for outside work. For location video work, this could be invaluable as you could secure a good location, raise the back and have a complete office and outdoor video setup all under shade.

Of course, it's really the fiberglass "bubble" back that sets my recommendation apart. There is enough room for 2 people to work comfortably in the back without bumping into each other. There is enough room to stand and in addition to sitting and standing room, there is a good amount of room storage, drawers, tables, etc.

Here is the typical setup that I have seen:

This leaves enough room for a person to pass through from the drivers seat to the work area in the back and provides a solid amount of work room.

As mentioned, these trucks can be outfitted with both roof and side mounted ladder hooks. It's also possible to sand on the roof and install hooks to tie down a tripod.

I would contact the postal service in LA. That would be your best shot, going to the direct source.
