In my opinion, the prices on all Mercedes Benz models from 2000 and older are pretty low right now. However, it's important to find one that is maintained correctly. In addition, some of models from that era including the S500 experienced reliability issues. I would purchase one with caution if I were you. I would think that a low mileage example that has been pampered would have fewer issues than a well worn model.
If you like the design and the way the car drives, go for it. However, I'd recommend keeping several thousand dollars around just in case something goes on you. I believe replacing certain suspension components in the S500 can get pretty pricey. For the smaller models, things may not be so bad. After all, the S-Class and SL-Class are pretty expensive cars, and they have quite a bit in them that can go wrong.
