Hi, For dogs that pull when you walk on lead or are otherwise 'headstrong', you can try the Gentle Leader (recommended from personal experience) or Halti Leader (similar style product). Both work like a horse's halter.
Gentle Leader: http://www.amazon.com/s.html/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_k2k_1?ie=UTF8&keywords=gentle%20leader%20head%20collar&index=blended
Halti Leader: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=875
Follow positive reinforcement tips and take at least two weeks to fit the collar properly and to acclimate your pet to the new training collar. These are not like metal 'check' chains and corrections, when needed are smoother and easier on you and the dog.
An alternate collar is called a martingale, which is a limited slip collar (image 2).
