I was a huge Simpsons fan back when they were good. I stopped buying the box sets around season 7 (that being just about when the funny died), my family still bought me some for Christmas up until season 10, when they finally heard frequently enough how much I hated the later years.
A lot of the writers didn't really move at all. Mimi Pond did Designing Women and nothing else, Conan O'Brien's been stuck on the same Talk-Show gig for years (haha).
But other writers moved on to other shows. John Vitti moved on to King of the Hill. John Schwartzwelder, alternately, stayed with the show until 1996 and pretty much gave writing up (except a quick consultation on the Simpsons movie which was just terrible).
I find it great to track a few of your favorite episodes and see what those writers are doing now.
Bart the Lover, for instance, where Bart puts a picture of Gordie Howe in a dating service letter to Ms. Krabappel, posing as Woodrow. This was written by John Vitti, who also did Lisa's Substitute, where Lisa is desperate for the attention of Dustin Hoffman voiced Mr. Bergstrom (uncredited) and Mr. Plow, which - I shouldn't even have to explain this episode. He's recently worked on Ice Age and Robots.
Lisa vs Malibu Stacy, where we get further hints of Wayland Smither's orientation, was written by Josh Weinstein who did Who Shot Mr. Burns and Bart vs Australia. He's now executively producing various tv shows, including a consultant producer on Futurama.
I saw Matt Groening behind a desk at a comic book conference, not even being noticed by people walking by. I think he knows The Simpsons now sucks, but it has gotten so much publicity and become so ingrained in society people are afraid to stop watching it for fear of becoming uncool. Like many episodes of Saturday Night Live, the line is "the longer you've been on, the longer you've been on." He's now raking in the big bucks executively producing Futurama, Simpsons video games, and ultimately doing anything he can to drive his once great franchise into the ground.

J. Stewart Burns has since worked for "Unhappy ever after" and Futurama.
Richard Appel is now the executive producer of King of the Hills, and has helped with the Cleveland Show.
Al Jean has since created the web series "jesus and his brothers."
John Swartzwelder has pretty much disappered from the media since his Simpson days and rarely shows himself in front of the cameras. He is a known recluse.
Ian Maxtone-Graham has just recently won an Annie Award for his piece "24 Minutes" and is still busy producing other works.
And we all know where Conan O'Brien went.

I completely agree, the Simpsons was great up until season 6.5. The beginning of season 9 was when I stopped watching it, afraid to develop a negative opinion based on the later works. I guess its hard to make new episodes funny, when you've done episodes about everything lol.
I'm a big South Park fan though, Trey Parker and Matt Stone's work seems to never falter. I think it's because they do alot of the writing in the week prior to airing, thus making every episode up to date with current events.
