When you listen to music, does it have to be in a language you understand?

What is your opinion about listening to music, do you need to understand the words to appreciate it?

Absolutely not - I love almost every form of music which includes Itallian Opera and I don't speak it, but most opera moves me deeply, especially The Marriage of Figaro. Just gorgeous.

I also have a few cd's from Nepal. Gorgeous flute, sitar and tabla music that's very basic, and yet very emotional and complex. I've NO idea what they are saying, but it still moves me.

Look at modern dance music from Germany, reggae from Jamaica, that fantastic salsa music from Spain and sometimes I don't even know what Snoop is talking about!!

Music is a language all it's own and really, the words are secondary (well, MOST of the time!). What's important it the feeling it gives you and your response to the music. Does it inspire you? does it make you happy or sad? Does it make you proud? See, that's the beauty of music - it speaks to both our soul AND your mind if you'll let it.

( I included my music from Nepal cd below - really, check it out. Gorgeous).

Music is an universal language.
So you don´t need to know the text in a song.
But it happens, when I listen to music, and finds a song very good,I want to know that the text is about

Not exactly. I listen to music in other languages such as italian, french, german, hindi, arabic and greek. I always try to find the lyrics traduction so that I can understand it. My language is spanish, I learned english by getting involved in it through music, book and tv. No I am working on italian. For me music in another language inspires me to search and learn fron that other language.

I listen to Music in English and Spanish most of the time, but I enjoy Italian music a lot too, since I am also trying to learn Italian. But there is something about Arabic music that I like.

So I'm walking down Kapakalua in Honolulu and I hear these flutes. They were playing Condor by Simon and Garfunkle, and selling their cd's for 15 dollars. Had to have one.

The cd I bought is Cacha Fiesta.

Yes, now days when I listen to music, to a song that has words, it has to be in a language that I understand. When I was young, I didn't care.

Nope, I listen to both lyrical and instrumental music and it's wonderful either way.

It's nice to be able to understand the lyrics but not critical as far as I'm concerned. That may mean I'm inadvertently tapping my foot to some song talking about lopping people's heads off and merrily tossing them down a hill or something, but hey life is risky that way.

Absolutely not! I think most of us listen to music for the music itself, not just the lyrics. This is why many love instrumental music. No lyrics are required. The only addition I find lyrics give to the music is the rhyming pattern, and one need not understand the language to hear the rhyme of the lyrics.

I don't think it is important to be able to understand the lanuage to listen and enjoy music. There are some songs that the words need to be understood but the tone of the music can take you to places you've never been, so to speak. I like any music whether I understand the lyrics or not and close my eyes and just daydream.

I believe music has a universal language. You don't need to understand the language to enjoy music. But to get a more rapport with the writers and singers emotions, it is nice to know what the lyrics mean.
source(s):
music, language

I enjoy music with lyrics in many languages. As a child, I enjoyed music in English and I didn't understand a word of it.
Now I surf the internet looking for music in any language and I've found stuff like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOZHK6AWH_E

This one makes me happy and I don't even know what it says.

Or bizarre stuff like this other one: Mike Patton singing Evidence in Italian

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9EWVaCsRawc

I think the message gets through in any language.
