I can work on Mahalo and complete articles for other clients and sites that I work for at the same time. Or I can use one computer for social networking and promoting articles and pages while I write articles and build pages on the other one. The only time that this doesn't work is when my son is home. Most of the time that he is here he is on the laptop watching Netflix, playing games, or reading about dinosaurs and sea creatures. I don't want to interfere with his learning, and I need him to stay occupied during the times that I work, so during those times I just make due with the desktop.
Another advantage of using both of them at home is that when I get tired of sitting at my desk I can take the laptop into the living room, sit in the recliner or on the couch and watch TV while I research articles or look for other jobs. I still use the desktop more than anything, and the main thing that I like about it is the larger keyboard is easier to use and I can use the larger monitor. If I use the laptop for longer periods of time, I have problems with my eyes hurting. With the larger monitor, I can be further away from the screen and there is less eye strain. With Windows 7, I can also have several Windows open at one time and even put them side by side if I am working on more than one thing at a time.
I use an HP Pavilion Quad Core desktop with a 30" flat screen monitor that I have mounted on the wall. My laptop is an HP Probook with only a 13" screen, but it is still sleek and handy. Maybe I am spoiled, but my workspace is a priority to me and efficiency is paramount.

M$I created my very own cubby hole work space with my desktop and that is where I am happiest.
Only with a desktop can you use multiple screens.
I also have a special desk I found in 1991. It's called a Mac Table. You can see in the picture that the front part of the table is cut into three front sections. The middle section is for the keyboard and can be lowered while the two outer portions can stay up. All three portions can go up or down.
I recently added a keyboard that was recommended to me by @potterarchy. I posted a contest question not long ago, and I found my current keyboard (in picture below) from another page on her link. (Das Keyboard)
Contest: Guess which letter is not working on my keyboard and win!
I love the fact that it keeps people who can't touch type away from my desk!
I have plenty of opportunities to use many different laptops since my hubby repairs them for a living... but I always feel so restricted with the keyboard and other options. Now that the weather is hot, I don't want my lap to get even more hot from a laptop. I also like to have my email on all day so I can quickly check it at a glance, and I would need to have a laptop plugged in since a battery wouldn't last that long.
Only with a desktop can you personalize the keyboard, mouse and monitor. I wouldn't change my 'cubby' for a laptop, no matter how cool!

M$I like the big screen of the iMac and... I like working with Macs anyway. It's so much easier for me to get the things done that I need to get done. When I go to my laptop (actually, a Tablet), it's just a different experience... very different.

M$Now that I have an iPad the laptop doesn't come to the living room or dinning room table anymore I use the iPad to look things up and keep up with email and only use the laptop for the heavy duty tasks.
My own personal experiences.

M$I use my laptop at home because it is handy, portable and readily available to me. With my eighteen months old baby running around the house. The only way to keep track of what she is doing at a particular time and still do some stuff on the internet is by using my laptop.
I only make use of the desktop whenshe is asleep or playing with her dad. But I make more use of the laptop.

M$When I need to work quickly, I have been known to attach a keyboard and mouse and work at my desk.

M$I stopped using a desktop for my personal use 3 years ago; I was reluctant to buy one at first but since them I am hooked
I like however to have a big size laptop; I don't like small ones

Wow @kelraye78 that looks sweet!
So the 30" isn't too big or too high in your cubby? I currently have 2 19" monitors, but plan on super sizing to 3 20" screens soon.
*A+ on the lighting too!
