When will the original Star Wars Trilogy come out on Blu-Ray?

Tip for best answer: M$2.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Before I read this thread I had no idea Star Wars wasn't available for Blu-Ray, but I guess you learn something new everyday.

I take it Blu-Ray gets this question often, so often its in their official FAQ section.

The Star Wars movies have so far not been announced for Blu-ray, however, it is being distributed by Fox which is a Blu-ray supporting studio.

Here is a YouTube video portraying the Blu-Ray drama

You can sort of pre-order it on Amazon. It isn't available, they don't have a release date and there isn't any info on the page for when it will be available, but if you sign up, you can be notified when it does become available: http://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Trilogy-Episodes-IV/dp/B000PMLFRA

George Lucas owns all the rights and technology and therefore it's pretty cool because it's all his choice as to when it will be released on certain formats. If you start searching Star Wars forums, you'll run into endless threads about conspiracies and rumors about this, most of which cite Lucas saying he's waiting for the right technology and he's not a big Blu-Ray fan. This forum is a good example, it's a couple years old but it gets the point across: http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=19200

I don't have the exact reason why, but Star Wars films take longer than most to come out on new formats. They took a while to be available on VHS, then a while to come out on DVD and we still don't have Blu-Ray.

And the answer to your question is that currently there is no Blu-Ray release date. I think there will be one, and you will definitely hear about it when it happens.

As of May 2007, Lucasfilm has no plans to release any of the Star Wars movies on Blu-Ray of HD DVD. According to Ben Patterson: Yahoo! Tech, given how fussy Lucas is about new formats, it could be 2010 at the earliest.

Its all on Lucas. He did not release the 6 episodes for a long time on DVD because he is so afraid of pirating, but at the time said he was so busy on his filming the later episodes. Reading one of the answers here that it will be a few years is better then the one I read that Lucasfilms spokesman John SIngh in 2007 said they had no plans to release it on Blu-ray (or at the time HD-DVD). http://www.dvdtown.com/news/no-star-wars-on-blu-ray-or-hd-dvd/4480 I will say this, that the Lucasfilms THX guys did one of the best jobs I have seen on the versions released on DVD. They are wonderful in clarity and detail and on a good up-resolution DVD player rival Blu-ray. The only other DVDs I have seen that have this quality are the last James Bond sets that were reprocessed and called the Ultimate Edition in 2006 (and I think are what they used for the Blu-ray releases.

This question was asked directly to Steve Sansweet, the head of Fan Relations at Lucasfilm at Comic Con in July of 09. Here is a link to the full answer: http://www.examiner.com/examiner/x-2730-Star-Wars-Examiner~y2009m7d29-Star-Wars-on-Bluray

The short answer: in the next several years...a entire Blu-Ray box set with deleted scenes, featured content, etc.
