Funny thing is, that the mind is a mysterious entity. Yes, we can research the brain itself. But your mind is different. Your mind isn't something you can touch or see. You mind is your thoughts, dreams, and all those notions in between.
I enjoy when my mind wanders. Quite often it's a vacation from the stress and constant adult banter that usually exists there.

M$It's so nice of you to ask!
My mind wanders anywhere and nowhere
while it ponders every task.
It goes down to the basement
with a creepy-crawly taint.
It rises to the ceiling
where the height could make me faint.
My mind floats on soapy bubbles
and escapes with a small sigh.
It shoots for the cheesy moon
and comes back with pizza pie.
It clucks just like a chicken
and flees the plucking hand.
It swims in sweetly blushing wine
and sinks my piggies into sand.
My mind's eye roams quite freely
without real money or true means.
It recalls old dog-eared pages
and sees stars from silver screens.
It often tells me "think think think"
much like a bear called Pooh.
When your head's stuck in a honey pot
what else is there to do?
Now there's no end to silly nonsense
in my mind's imaginings
when it flies around ConundrumLand
powered by great big buffalo wings.

M$I'm not one to read into free association like a Freudian, attributing connecting one idea to another as a sign of some unconscious drive or tendency, but I do think it's sometimes good for us to just drift off. As you freely let thoughts pop into and out of your head without trying to stay on any one track, sometimes you remember interesting things, or think about new things.
When my mind wanders, it tends to either dwell on the past or the future. I'm not one to be distracted by what's in the room, generally, though I always think maybe being that kind of distractable might be more fun :)
I tend to wonder how things would have gone had I done something differently, or how the future might be based on what I do now. I'm usually throwing possibilities around in my mind. I think it's a way to soothe myself when the current environment is unpleasant.
