When was the thong "invented?"
Serious question guys - My wife and I were watching "The Running Man" with Arnold Swarzenneger (sp?) last night when this part comes on with "The Running Man Dancers." She looks at me and says, "What, they didn't have thons in the 80's? Why are they weearing those weird unitards?"
"I don't know baby, that's an interesting question."
"Well, why don't you ask the folks on Mahalo tomorrow and find out when the thong was invented. Cause, DAMN. They needed them in this movie!"
So I ask you dear friends, when was the thong invented/ popularized?
I WAS going to post a pic along with this question, but none were appropriate for this incredibly serious question.

Many fashion historians believe that the thong first appeared in the 1939 World's Fair. New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia ordered the city's nude dancers to cover themselves and the thong was invented to just barely do the job.
Fashion designer, Rudi Gernreich has been credited with introducing the first thong bikini in 1974. Another reference states that thongs, originally called tangas, first hit the beaches of Brazil in 1977.
