When was the last time this many no-hitters were thrown in one season?

With Roy Halladay’s perfect game yesterday, we’ve already had three no-hitters, or perfect games this season. I’m wondering when was the last time we’ve had so many, so soon in the baseball season. It seems like we have a no-hitter about once a season these days, but is that accurate? And even if it is, do we usually have three before the calendar even gets to June? Also, since there are only 20 perfect games in the history of baseball, when was the last time we had two in one season?

There have been four no hitters in Major League Baseball in 2010. The last time there were at least four in a season was 2003. In that season, there were seven no hitters, but six of them were combined. Only Kevin Millwood of the Philadelphia Phillies pitched a complete game no hitter in 2003. You have to go all the way back to 1991 to find as many no hitters thrown by a single pitcher. During the 1991 season, Bret Saberhagen of the Kansas City Royals, Nolan Ryan of the Texas Rangers, Tommy Greene of the Phialdelphia Phillies, Wilson Alvarez of the Chicago White Sox and Dennis Martinez of the Montreal Expos all threw no hitters. There have never been two perfect games in a season before the two this year by Roy Halladay and Dallas Braden.

The most recent no-hitter in Major League Baseball was thrown by Roy Halladay of the Philadelphia Phillies on October 6, 2010 against the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the 2010 National League Division Series. It was the sixth of the 2010 season (the most no-hitters in one season since seven in 1991) and the second in MLB postseason history, the first being Don Larsen's perfect game for the New York Yankees versus the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1956 World Series.
