It’s a common misconception that the 1922 silent film Nosferatu was the first vampire movie to be released. However there were actually other movies based on vampires that were made before this loosely based Dracula movie was released.
In fact, the very first vampire movie that was released in the movie theatres was in 1909 and was entitled “Vampire of the Coast.” Very little is known about this film other then its title.
Perhaps Nosferatu is so remembered because it did cause a sensation back when it was made. Because the actor who played the title role Max Schreck was so believable in the part, there was a rumor that he was indeed a vampire. This theory was the basis for a 2000 movie called “Shadow of the Vampire.”
