In the Victorian era, the sending of Christmas cards began. The very first commercial Christmas and New Year’s card is thought to have been created and printed in London, England in 1843.
In London, an edition of 1,000 of these Christmas cards was placed on sale in 1843. These cards were printed in lithography by Jobbins of Warwick Court, Holborn, London, and hand-colored by a professional "colourer" named Mason.
A British narrative painter named John Callcott Horsley and a Royal Academician, designed the very first Christmas and New Year’s card. Sir Henry Cole (the first director of the Victoria and Albert Museum) had requested that Horsley create it for him. Cole was looking for an exclusively created card that he could send to friends at Christmas.
