LSU, Louisiana State University began as land grants to Louisiana in 1806, 1811, and 1827 for the purpose of constructing a "seminary of learning" near Pineville, LA. The seminary was finally established in 1853 and opened in 1860. But the task of keeping the seminary open was extremely effected by outside forces like the Civil War. The first superintendent was Col. William Tecumseh Sherman and his departure to participate in the war caused the school to close in 1861. The school was closed again in 1863 because of the invasion by the federal army in the area. It reopened again in 1865, but in 1869 it fell victim to a fire which prompted the move to Baton Rouge. The first commencement was held in ]]1869]]. In 1870 the school name was changed to Louisiana State University.
