The Land Rover brand has undergone many changes since it was formed by the Rover Company in 1948, with only one model – the Land Rover. This was inspired by an American World War II Jeep and was nicknamed “Centre Steer”. In 1967, Land Rover becomes a part of Leyland Motors Ltd. The company was renamed British Leyland and the automotive line is renamed Rover Triumph.
In 1975, following the collapse of British Leyland, Land Rover splits from the company and is now part of the commercial vehicle division called Land Rover Leyland Group. This later became known as Land Rover Limited in 1978.
In 1988, the Rover group is privatized and becomes part of British Aerospace and is known simply is Rover. It was taken over by BMW in 1994, and later sold to Ford in 2000. Ford later sold the company to Indian based Tata Motors in 2008 and the company has owned Land Rover ever since.
