When traveling across country with 2 dogs should they be crated or allowed to relax in the back seat of the car?
I am planning a cross country move and I have two Australian Shepherds and am just trying to figure out the best way to let them travel. Should they be kept in the crates most of the trips with only breaks out of the crate where they can walk about at the rest areas and after stopping at hotels along the way?

I think this would be a matter of personal preference. if left up to the dogs I'm sure they'd prefer the extra space to stretch out and look out the windows maybe even hang out them, but the question is do you want them roaming around the back seat? Will they behave in a manner safe to you while driving in the back seat? (I know my dog would be licking my ears and being all annoying the whole way.)
You could try having them lose and if it doesn't work out crate them if nothing else. Either way your idea to stop periodically for outside time is a good idea. Also remember to have water and something for the dog to drink it out of in the car.
