When training a dog how long can you listen to one whimper as he accustoms himself to his crate?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

All night. The thing to do is learn to tune him out, by ignoring his whining early on, you are not giving him the attention he wants, and therefore not rewarding his bad behavior (in this case, whining). It may take a few nights, but be firm! He will eventually catch on.

Until he s/he stops this is the point of training, if you let it out it defeats the purpose. But when I had dogs I never put them in a crate to begin with, although they were trained to command. You might even consider a treat when they stop to reinforce the behavior.

All night if necessary. The last dog we adopted had been abandoned in a crate. :( The humane society workers who handled our pet adoption warned us that he might never retrain to the crate. It took three years. but he now goes in there on his own sometimes. We only lock them in their crates when traveling or when company comes over.
