When running an Iron Man or other long race, are there bathrooms along the route?

I'm just wondering how these races work.

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Good question.

Because of health concerns most Ironman Triathlons spend a bunch of time and money in planning the safety of their event. Bathrooms is one aspect of the game they have figured out as well. As you may expect, most races have large facilities at the beginning and the end of the race (locker rooms, etc.); however, during the race, the going gets tough.

Depending on the length of the race, port a potties are placed at strategic points along the way: water stations, first aid stations, areas with a bunch of spectators. These are accessible to the racers and are "race legal".

HOWEVER, i have learned two things from my research: 1) The port a potties are never enough. There's nothing like waiting in a line to pee (or deuce) during a timed race...no pressure. 2) While racing, one doesnt tend to hold things in for a port a potty (or sometimes the urge to go blindsides you). Most true triathletes have no qualms about peeing or even deucing along the way. Hopefully you can find a nice wooded private place...

Yes, there are, at least at a well-run race. Most people will never run an Iron Man, but marathons are becoming very popular.

Race organizers know that you have a lot of people consuming a lot of fluids. They'd never get permission to set up the race course without providing a certain number of portable toilets. Otherwise, you'd have thousands of people taking a leak anywhere they can find. Which they often do anyway, in fact, since it's faster than going into a portajohn, but at least the race organizers tried.

Usually there is a very large number of them at the start and end points (usually the same place, for most races) because that's when you've got the most people at their most hydrated. There are usually local rules on how many they must have at minimum for any large gathering, whether it's a race or a concert, in order to keep the place clean, but a race will try to get more than that.

Usually along the route the bathrooms are clustered in groups of two or three, every few miles, about as often as there are water stops. At the early phases of the race that can be kind of crowded, but once the pack has thinned out it's usually not so bad.
