Of the beers they offer it seems the Regetta Golden would be a good choice since it would be a crisp beer for summer months. This beer would also be the beer that is most likely to appeal to a large group of people since it wouldn't be too bold.

Arrogant Bastard Ale. Come on...(In the interest of avoiding flamewars, I will not say which one of the 3 of them I think is an Arrogant Bastard. It just seems fitting given the circumstances.)

M$Sometimes the lone voice in the wilderness is all that is needed :)
I certainly understand and respect your opinion! I also understand the difficulty that can come from family members which suffer from alcoholism and coming from that mindset I can't imagine any other opinion to have. I do think the issues with alcoholism are such that this meeting doesnt help or hurt them since the problem stems from something so deep that media (or family and friends for that matter) doesn't change someones decision. Those that suffer from this kind of problem need help that should be a priority among society but, as much as I wish it were true, changing how others act is not going to help those that really suffer from the problem.
In the end I think your one voice can echo loud enough that it doesn't matter what the President does :)
I understood that people might disagree with my statement-- and thought carefully about it before posting it. Having seen family members suffer with alcoholism, however, I am (perhaps overly) sensitive to the issue of connecting alcohol with "problem solving". People don't need alcohol to lubricate a meeting to discuss a disagreement.
I understand that I may be a very lonely voice in the wilderness on this issue-- but it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the story on the news this morning.
They are not planning an economic package, they are trying to sooth feelings. But if you feel that way you should have picked an NA or near beer.
This is one that I would have to disagree with (not sure I have ever disagreed with something you have said before @ssmacd lol).
We can all see that our world is changing and society is becoming frustrated with government more and more each day. In order to calm this I do believe government officials need to become more like your every day citizen. Cultural points require that the President extends coffee/tea invites to other officials from around the world because that is business... with the invitation we see here it is not so much business as personal, much the same as it would be if I had an arguement with my neighbor and wanted them to come over and talk about it. I think this opinion just depends on what you see this invitation as... business or personal.
As for issues with alcohol in this country... There are issues associated with alcohol (probably always will be) in this country but I think the President offering this kind of thing helps with these issues. By making this offer the President is showing that drinking a beer with friends can be done WITHOUT the negative issues that can be associated with them, its not a couple of guys getting together to get smashed, instead it is a couple of guys meeting to talk about problems over A beer, which I feel is just as appropriate as coffee or tea (in fact take a look at many other cultures such as German and Japan, where alcohol is a standard practice even among business/professional meetings!)
Thank You

M$When I was drinking beer, Pabst Blue Ribbon Extra Light was my favorite beer. This was in 1970. I was in the Army. When I was off duty, I would go down to the bowling alley and have a beer and a pizza.
In 1970 Pabst was still a genuine brewery. I remember touring their brewery in Milwaukee around 1980, I think. Even then the beer was bland mass market, but the competition was less.
A company that doesn't even brew any more and gets by on advertising and past reputation? Their beer is brewed by Miller under contract. And, it's lousy beer. That would be a disgraceful choice to serve. There are thousands of American breweries, including many in and around Washington DC.
work and alcohol should always be at bay length....
this actreduces efficiency at work which is bad and defeats the purpose of the meeting ... what example you gonna set for the public that you are drinking and then doing deals for their countries ..
its simply bad...

Considering the recent growth in the craft beer sector I would find it difficult to associate someone that drinks a craft beer with elitism. Perhaps that feeling stems from where I live and the friends I have? It just seems to me that craft beer better represents the US when compared to the large brewers, which have little ties to the US any longer.
I do agree that a local beer from DC would make sense as well but by offering one of their local beers I think it would convey a feeling of trying to make them feel "at home" during the meeting.
The buckler surprised me but, from what I can tell, it seems to be a good choice in the non-alcohol world. I was also pleased to see Gates pick (even though it is a light) because Sam Adams is normally my default beer when at a bar I don't know with limited selection...
That's pretty reasonable. But one could argue that since they are visiting Washington DC, it should be a local beer from near there for the visit. During the campaign for the Presidency Obama tried to avoid craft beers in order not to seem elitist. Do you think he's over that now?
I agree completely about craft beer not being elitist. But I noticed Obama shying away from craft beer during the campaign while he was being accused of it. It will be interesting to learn, if we find out, what he drinks now that he's in the White House. Craft beers are one of the best examples of American small to medium businesses and deserve the President's support.
The press has got Blue Moon to comment now:
“People have been brought together over a beer for ages,” said Julian Green, spokesman for Blue Moon, the nation’s largest craft brand.
Just a little update I thought might go well with this question: http://www.mlive.com/politics/index.ssf/2009/07/president_obama_sergeant_crowl.html

But what to serve? Crowley apparently likes Blue Moon beer. Gates favors Red Stripe or Beck's. Don't look for Obama to order a similar high-priced brand, however.
"The president had a Budweiser at the All-Star Game," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters, hinting at Obama's likely choice.

The beer summit has now happened and there were a couple of surprises. Crowley got his Blue Moon, complete with a slice of lemon. Obama opted for Bud Light, so pale the tablecloth looked white through it and the glass. Gates backed off the imports and chose Sam Adams Light, which is actually an amber beer that gets the best reviews of the bunch. It is the only real American brewed and owned beer and craft beer even though it is a light. Biden showed up too, with the surprise pick of Buckler, a non-alcohol beer made by Heineken, which is the only import of the four. What do the folks at Beer Advocate think of these beers? Gates and Crowley chose B's, Biden a C, and Obama a D-. But that one is by far the best seller.
I saw that this morning in other media. One really ought to be able to add stuff like that to one's question in Mahalo.
So, the elitist professor likes imports. Becks is a good basic German beer, Red Stripe is in my opinion not so good but is from Jamaica, which may endear it to Gates. The same brewery makes the excellent Dragon Stout, which is rarely available here. The policeman, being from an enlightened area, likes the light but Belgian style Blue Moon from Coors, often a first stop as people learn to appreciate better beer. I don't think one can tell much from the President drinking Budweiser at the All Star game because the beer choice at most stadiums is often limited to one or two mass markets.
It's a shame none of them, so far, seem to be choosing an American owned and brewed beer.
I've been having a problem with the helpful/not helpful buttons not working for me as well... gotta love site glitches
I've been trying to mark your answer helpful; but, it just won't take for some reason.
