When making online purchases, is Paypal more secure than giving credit card numbers?
Would it be safer to do my online shopping via paypal? Are online stores like Amazon able to asure your credit card's security or is it better to have a third party for the transaction?

While I’m admittedly not an expert on credit card security and identity theft protection, I think that there are pros and cons to both services like PayPal as well as credit cards. Credit cards by law offer a level of financial protection that keeps you from being responsible for charges based on how quickly you report the fraud and additionally most credit card companies have great service to identify fraudulent transactions on your card. On the other hand, PayPal would also have limits on the threat (limited to your account balance).
Probably the safest way to go that I am aware of is one-time use credit card numbers. Many credit card companies will now allow you to log into your credit card account online and generate a single-use credit card number. This card number is associated with your account, but can only be used once. That means that if the number is stolen, it cannot be reused. I find these to be quite useful (and comforting) when I’m buying online.
Specific to Amazon – the only payment option on their site is credit card. You cannot use third parties like PayPal on Amazon.
