When is the best time to tell your boss that you won't continue to work with them after your contact ends?

My contract ends on June and I won't extend it, not even if they offer a salary raise because I find that its ideal clash with my own, especially concerning how to educate children. The principal and the school board are also demanding and unsympathetic toward the teachers, much more than the usual school boards do. So, when is the best time to tell them I won't work for them anymore next year?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Here in the US, it's tough to find good teachers, and even tougher for teachers to find work. I would say that if you are not willing to stay, allow enough time for the school to find a suitable replacement. Waiting until the last minute will only encourage them to choose the first available candidate. And while you'll no longer be there, it's no care to you, but the children are the ones who will suffer, and that's the reason you began to teach right? As horrible as your experience has been, do what's best for you, the kids, and the staff that's stuck there. It's only right.

This holds true for any other position as well. Public safety, government, and even small businesses. If you can not resolve issues between yourself and your employer, perhaps it is best to part ways. However, doing so responsibly will not only show character and pride, but will create a more dignified exit.

Yes. But when is the best time? When is "last minute" and when is appropriate?

I would say that as long as you are sure that you won't be returning, now would be the appropriate time. Last minute would be within 2-3 weeks of the end of the school year, or the end of your contract. Just my opinion.

As a school teacher I would say after the school year ends you could say I won't be back next year. If they come to offer you a new contract before the end of the year then that would be the appropriate time to let them know. They have all summer to find a replacement. In the US two weeks notice is the norm for leaving a regular year round job. When I was doing Corporate fund management for a large multi-national firm I gave three months notice as I was the only one who knew my job and it would take that long for me to bring someone up to speed. It was also a friendly departure as they knew I was going out on my own.

I would give them a month or so notice. This way they can get a replacement for you. That is to bad that they are the way the are with you. Teachers really do deserve much more recongnition than they get.

Good Luck !!

I think now is the time to tell them, by the end of March. This is the time of year when there are the most interviews for next school year. Many school districts close over the summer break, and so they like to get next year's staffing done before the end of the school year. Otherwise, they sometimes end up getting a long term substitute to start the kids off while they interview and select the new teacher. That is hard on the kids and on their new teacher.

When would the contract normally be up for renegotiation? That would probably be the perfect time. While you want to leave them enough time to find a replacement for you, you also don't want to let them know too early as that could make your day to day work more difficult. I'd say maybe 30-90 days. Sorry for not being more specific.

I don't know when they're going to renew the contract. Maybe soon maybe later. Thanks for the answer.

Agreed. When the contract comes up for renewal. No need to share your personal reasons about it. Just explain that other opportunities hold more of an interest for you and your advancement in your field than theirs can.
