When is Saint Patrick's Day?

Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Tuesday March 17 2009
Wednesday March 17 2010
Thursday March 17 2011
Saturday March 17 2012
Sunday March 17 2013

You probably already knew it is always on March 17th. Also the day of the week is always one past the previous year except every fourth year when a leap year bumps it a further day out.

If you are in Ireland you might expect to start celebrating 5 or 6 days prior to the 17th.

The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place not in Ireland, but in the United States. Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City on March 17, 1762; which date has since become the day of celebrating St. Patrick's Day.

Over the next thirty-five years, Irish patriotism among American immigrants flourished, prompting the rise of so-called "Irish Aid" societies, like the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each group would hold annual parades featuring bagpipes and drums.

Americans celebrate the holiday by wearing green clothing. Many people, regardless of ethnic background, wear green-coloured clothing and items.

Some cities paint the traffic stripe of their parade routes green. Chicago dyes its river green and has done so since 1961 when sewer workers used green dye to check for sewer discharges and got the idea to turn the river green for St. Patrick's Day.

Indianapolis also dyes its main canal green. Savannah dyes its downtown city fountains green. University of Missouri Rolla - St Pat's Board Alumni paint 12 city blocks kelly green with mops before the annual parade. In Jamestown, New York, the Chadakoin River is dyed green each year.

Just to jump in on this - yes, this year, it's Tuesday March 17th!
Don't forget to wear green! Not because of leprechauns, but because you'll be made fun of if you don't!

Have fun and stay safe!
