When is product placement "too much"?
Comparatively, I was just listening to a podcast novel where the author wrote in a commercial for himself. One character says to another, "I'm listening to this great podcast novel by ______ that I downloaded from ___________." That one, on the other hand, was done so terribly that I took the headphones off and unsubscribed.
What's too much, and what's ok? When is it simply a case of realistic descriptions of the world (ala King), and when to you scream "Aw come on, they got paid by Pepsi for that!! (ahemBackToTheFuture)" When do you live with it, and when is it upsetting enough to bail out?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Movies are expensive to make and product placements endorsements of companies can be a great way to help finance a film. Though the cost of films could be greatly reduced if actors took salary cuts. I digress. I have a simple rule of thumb on all productions I am associated with.
Product placement will only be allowed as long as it does not detract from a scene or the production as a whole. This is why I like independent film because it allows for greater freedom to make decisions over the project as a whole without as much outside interference.
I know it can be distracting to see a Pepsi banner in the background. You do have to realize though that the cost of production in most of these mediums is considerable. Sometimes you need to sleep with the devil to so that your vision can live. Yes that is sad and it is also all to true. Maybe someday artists will be able to express their vision without the worry of finance.
