When is it best to use a pixel/bitmap font, and when to use anti-aliased fonts on the web?

It seems that the best time to use an anti-aliased font would be when text tends to be larger. If a font is to be small, an anti-aliased image would make the letters look blurry, as they would be comprised of multiple colors instead of one solid color. Smaller fonts ought to be pixelated, or aliased.
The source isn't academic, but describes the difference rather clearly to me. Hope it helps!
