When I sweat what is my body telling me?

Why do I sweat? Why do I sweat when I have a cold? If I am cold how come I sweat? Is sweating a symptom of something more serious?

Hi!

Sweating or Perspiration is the natural process of excreting fluid (mostly water with small amounts of urea and salts) through the pores of your skin. Sweat is produced by the 2 to 5 million sweat glands in the human body. Sweating is your body’s natural cooling mechanism. When you are hot, your sweat glands kick into action and produce sweat. Sweating cools you down by the process of the liquid evaporating off of your skin, leaving a cooling effect. This is similar to when you get out of a pool or shower and feel cold. The moisture evaporates from your skin and takes body heat with it. This is why athletes are encouraged to drink lots of fluids so that your body can excrete them as sweat and cool you off while you are exercising. Without enough liquids or the ability to sweat you can be come over heated and even fall victim to heat stroke.
When you are sick you sweat for the same reason, to cool you off. If you have a fever your body is overheating and your sweat glands go into action to cool you down. There are some medical conditions that can lead to excessive sweating and include Menopause, Pregnancy, Thyroid problems Diabetes Alcoholism Stroke Heart failure, Cancer. Excessive sweating can also be caused by certain medications such as anti depressants, dry mouth medications, and some mineral supplements such as zinc. Sweating too little, known as Anhidrosis, can be a much more serious problem, and even life threatening in some cases. Anhidrosis can be caused by dehydration, burns, and some nerve and some skin and nerve disorders.

If you feel that you are sweating too much, pay close attention to your other symptoms as it could be a sign of a more serious problem. Excessive sweating by itself is harmless, as some people will naturally sweat more than others for a variety of factors. If you do notice other symptoms along with the excessive sweating it is best to consult a physician.

I hope this has helped.
