When I d/l a video from YouTube in FLV or WMV format it is too large to send in an email.
What free prog will compress it down for email?

Tip for best answer: M$0.10
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Mediacoder is a free video conversion program.
http://www.mediacoderhq.com/

When converting - if you look in the video tab - you can choose a codec to convert to.
Some codecs are good at compressing for uses like email. E.g. H264 or DIVX (Xvid)
Choose one of these and then set the maximum bitrate.
If its 3000 you will get a large file and good quality. If its 600 then you will get a small file - but it will have imaging artifacts involved in compressing the video. You can also choose to lower the frame rate from possibly 29fps to maybe 15. This will help to make the file much smaller.

The audio is compressed separately and can also be made smaller. Choose MP3 and play with the bitrate.
Just as for Video - smaller numbers mean smaller end files and lower quality.

Thank You, Neon22. I d/l'd Mediacoder, tested a 40 meg video clip using default settings but changed the bitrate to 15 fps, and it compressed down to a little over 4 megs, so I'm very pleased with your instructions!
Thanks!

Videos are hard to compress even smaller because they are usually already compressed (especially FLV files).

If you are trying to email a large video you could use a large emailing program like Securely Send- www.securelysend.com.

Well, tomsusound, it's easy task.

Required :
- email address (which you have, on yahoo, gmail, whereever)
- the tube video, no matter in what format (I assume you have it)
- the winrar software.

So:
1 go to where you have the video saved into your computer
2 select it
3 right click
4 choose "add to archive" (winrar)
5 on first window i shown - almot bottom - left is written "Split to volumes, bytes"
6 right bellow under that line write the needed size - I asume 9 mb is ok, then write 9000000
7 top right same dialog click browse and choose WHERE to save the new created archives
8 click "OK' from bottom
9 after archives are created, login into email, attach all archives and send to friends.
10 to re-build the original file:
- all archives are required
- must start to un-rar/zip files with the very first one from those created
- once process started, winrar will automatically un-rar all files and output the original video

Good luck !
