When does the Toyota Prius switch to gas and when is it electric?
How can I tell when my Prius is switching over to use gas? Can I change a setting on my Prius to make it run on gas?

The hybrid technology for your Toyota Prius determines when to switch between gas and electric motors, so there is nothing for you to do once you put the car in drive. The car switches back and forth automatically depending where you are in the driving sequence. When the car starts up, the engine will run for a few minutes while the car is in park, to charge up the battery. After a few minutes, the engine will stop and the car will be running on electric power only.
When you begin to drive from a dead stop, the electric engine only will kick in to overcome the friction force of inertia, and then switch between gas and electric during the driving phase. During braking and driving downhill, the friction from the wheels is converted back into electric power for the engine to use later.
