Hi there @kramer!
Grammy Awards is an annual ceremony where the outstanding music artists for a specific year is being recognized and awarded. The first ever Grammy awards transpired on May 4, 1959 at Beverly Hilton Hotel where they gave 28 awards.
Grammy started in 1958 when a group of record executive were threatened by the success of rock ‘n’ roll which they think will greatly affect the quality of pop music. The aim of Grammy Awards was to “cultivate a higher standard of popular taste”. However, years after, rock music were accepted and during 1961, the first award for rock music was given to Chubby Checker who won the ‘Best Rock & Roll Recording Award’ for that year.
Grammy Awards was actually called “Gramophone Award” back then because of its trophy which is a small gilded gramophone statue. These Grammy trophies are assembled by hand and finished in gold plating. Real trophies actually have the artist’s name on it. Real trophies are given after the awards night meaning those they receive on stage aren’t really the ones they will be taking home. These trophies are actually being re-used every year for the live-telecast.
