The introduction of Pink Floyd to the U.S. audience was in Oct.-Nov., 1967. The band was scheduled to perform on several dates at the Whiskey A Go Go in West Hollywood, CA and at the Fillmore in San Francisco. It was during this time that band member Syd Barrett was heavily involved with LSD and his unpredictable behavior caused cancellations and an early departure from the U.S.. They were booked on the incredibly popular American Bandstand hosted by Dick Clark as well as on the Pat Boone Show. During the filming of American Bandstand, Barrett stood with his mouth shut when he was supposed to be lip-synching the song. On the Pat Boone Show, he refused to answer any questions during the interviews.
They returned to the U.S. in 1968, sans Syd Barrett. The tour began on July 8 at the Kinetic Playground in Chicago, IL. They played the midwest first, with appearances in Detroit and Ann Arbor, MI]. They went on to the east coast, with shows in, Boston, and Philadelphia, They ended their tour out west, performing in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, WA, Sacramento and ending the tour at The Bank in Torrence, CA on August 24.
They remained fairly obscure on the U.S.music scene until the 1973 release of Dark Side of the Moon which reached number one on the U.S. top 20 and it remained on Billboard's Top 200 for over 700 weeks. It is considered to be one of the best albums of all time.
