The first of what will eventually be eight Harry Potter films, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (“Philosopher’s Stone” in England) came out in 2001. It was directed by Chris Columbus. The second film, “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,” also directed by Chris Columbus, was released in 2002. “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” released in theaters in 2004, was directed by Alfonso Cuaron. The fourth film in the series, “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire,” was released in 2005, was directed by Mike Newell and starred Robert Pattinson, who would later go on to find fame as Edward in the “Twilight” series. “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” the fifth film in the series, was directed by David Yates and was released in 2007. “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” was released in 2009. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1” is the first film based on the final book in the series, and was released in 2010. The final film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” has a release date of December 2011.

The series follows a young orphan, Harry Potter, as he finds out he has magical abilities and goes to school at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione are pitted against the wizarding world’s most nefarious villain, Lord Voldemort.
