Very true. But it wasn't much of a major holiday until the 20th century, when rabbis decided that they needed something during the Christmas season so Jewish kids wouldn't feel left out. Before that, it was sort of like Flag Day--a pretty minor holiday.
It is still not a major holiday. That was not the question. Rabbis have never decided to make it a larger holiday, they are a notably conservative lot. It is an old holiday. A lot of American families think it makes a substitute for Christmas but I doubt many rabbis would ever say anything like that.
